Description
MCP's Intro to Photoshop course is created with photographers in mind. Each tool, skill, and exercise demonstrated will enhance your ability to smoothly and confidently input, edit, adjust, and output images using Photoshop CS3, along with Adobe Bridge and Photoshop's Camera Raw. Time is allotted for students to work on skills during class and assignments are provided for those who want to practice learned tools outside of class, yielding a solid base of Photoshop knowledge and confidence.

Though no prior Photoshop experience is required for this course, it is not just an overview of the application. Tools and skills each student will learn in this course:

+ Download images from a digital camera, jump/flash drive, or import images from scanned film.

Levels and Curves, Hue and Saturation
+Use the Levels adjustment to correctly to set white point and black point. Hold down Option to view clipping.
+Use Curves adjustment to add contrast, open up shadows, generally control tones.
+Remove a color cast by adjusting individual color Curves.
+Remove a color cast by adjusting the individual color channels of the histogram using Levels.
+Undo any color saturation problems caused by Levels and Curves adjustments with a Hue and Saturation adjustment.

Camera Raw
+ Learn the benefits, simplicity, and power of working with Raw files.
+Using camera Raw as the primary tool to make global adjustments, even for jpgs and tiffs.
+Understand how to use the tools in the Basic, Curves, Detail, and HSL tabs.
+Create B&W images from color images using the HSL tab.
+Understand how to use the Red Eye, ReTouch, Crop, and Straighten tools.

Adjustment Layers
+Use adjustment layers to implement the ideas taught in Levels and Curves, Hue and Saturation.
+Understand the order to apply adjustment layers (Levels to set B&W points, Curves for contrast, then Hue and Saturation).

Local Adjustments
+ Dodge and burn to adjust exposure for portions of an image.
+Understand simple layers concepts, in preparation for Adjustment Layers and layer Masks.
+Use Curves and Hue and Saturation adjustment layers with layer masks to create local adjustments.
+Learn to use layer mask to either "paint in" or "paint out" the local adjustment.

Image Cropping, Sizing, Printing
+Be able to size an image and set resolution for home printing, service bureau printing, and web use.
+Be able to properly set up the Photoshop Print dialog box and OS/printer dialog box to print accurate color on inkjet printers.

Healing and Cloning
+Be able to remove objects and flaws from an image.
+Know when to use Heal tool and when to use Clone tool.
+Be able to control brushes to make adjustments invisible (size, opacity, hardness).

Requirements
Participants must have a solid working knowledge of computers, and a grasp of photographic concepts, though no prior knowledge of Photoshop is required.

If you have no experience with digital imaging, or you are not sure if you are ready for this class, it might be best to take Course #1000: Introduction to Digital Photography before taking this course. Read the list of skills for Course#1000 to see if you feel confident with the concepts listed.

Participants are allotted 15 hours of open lab time for no additional charge during the duration of this course in MCP's Digital Lab, for class related work only. Ink and paper fees still apply.
