Course Description
Students will become acquainted with the darkroom and learn the skills to develop film and make prints from negatives. Participants will also learn the basics of darkroom chemistry and safety, how to properly store negatives and prints, discover how to control the contrast of your negatives and prints, dodge and burn to enhance your images, and how to control the mood of the print through the exposure. The course will have informal lectures, class discussions, demonstrations, lots of hands-on darkroom time and one-on-one time with the instructor. There will be suggested assignments as well as encouragement to explore your own vision.
Requirements
Participants are expected to bring their own SLR 35mm camera with manual exposure control. Students gain access to MCP's Darkroom(including chemicals) during class but supply their own camera, film, and photo paper. Students enrolled in this class can use the Darkroom for no additional fee for the duration of this class, for class related work only.
Instructor
Peter Martin is an educator with over 22 years experience at the college level and has taught previously at the College of Visual Arts, Saint Paul and the Parsons School of Design, Paris, France. He holds a B.A. from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and an M.A. from the School of
Journalism, University of Minnesota.
As the senior designer of PixelPete Productions, Martin has created photo illustrations and web sites for a wide range of clients, including artists, musicians and MBI Publishing.
Martin's work often takes the form of street photography and is grounded in visual poetry. His work is collected privately and is represented in museums including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Bibliothéque Historique de la ville de Paris and the Bibliothéque National, Paris, France.
