Course Description
It has only been a year since the introduction of Adobe Lightroom but it has become the tool of choice for many professional photographers. Its task-based design and user interface enable photographers to quickly sort through and manage the 100s of images they regularly generate.

Lightroom catalogs images in a searchable database so they can be located by keyword, metadata, and filename. Its comprehensive non-destructive image adjustment capabilities are the same as Photoshop's Camera Raw adjustments, providing maximum image quality even after extensive edits.

This hands-on class demonstrates how to use Lightroom's five distinct modules to organize and adjust images, then output them as Slideshows, web sites, prints, or files. Students will use the Library Module to create catalogs of their own images, adding keywords and ratings. After using Lightroom's rating tools to select several of the best images, those images will be optimized using the tools in the Develop Module. Slideshows will be created with the Slideshow Module and each student will upload a gallery of images to the web using the Web Module. The last day students will print their images on MCP's Epson wide-format inkjet printers using the Print Module.

Topics that will be discussed and demonstrated:
+ catalog images for later searches using keywords
+ create image searches by keyword, date, metadata, or filename
+ use the Metadata Browser to search for images by file type, ISO, or serial number
+ quickly rank images using stars, colors, and flags
+ use the Compare and Survey displays to compare and rank images
+ adjust images non-destructively with the same Camera Raw capability as Photoshop
+ use built-in templates to save images for the web, email, DVDs, or upload to Flickr
+ create Slideshows for promotional purposes
+ upload a website, created by Lightroom, to the web
+ print one-per-page or many-per-page images to inkjet printers

Requirements
Participants must have a solid working knowledge of computers and should have some experience with an image adjustment program like Photoshop CS, Elements, Lightroom, or Aperture.

The class is hands-on, with each student using a 17" iMac computer provided at MCP's Digital Lab. Students will practice each concept during class to make sure they understand it. The class is taught on Macs, but once within the Photoshop and Lightroom applications, the functionality and user interface are nearly identical to Windows. Windows users will easily learn the few Mac computer functions that are required.

Students are encouraged to bring in files that they would like to use during the workshop exercises (using a jump/flash drive), but it is not required. Jump/flash drives and CDs will not be provided by MCP.

Participants are allotted 10 hours of open lab time for no additional charge during the duration of this course in MCP's Digital Lab, for class related work only. Ink and paper fees still apply.

Instructor
Steve Bye is an Adobe Certified Instructor of Photoshop. He has used it extensively since the release of version 4 over ten years ago.

After shutting down his wet darkroom many years ago, Bye's interest in photography was rekindled when the very first photo inkjet printers became available. Though their quality at the time was poor, digital photography using inkjet printers seemed worth investigating. Now, ten years later, he has worked extensively with over seven models of Epson printers, using Photoshop to optimize images for printing on fine art papers and new media that simulate silver gelatin papers.

Bye's strength as a teacher is in explaining difficult concepts in easily understandable terms, a skill learned while at Hewlett-Packard as a trainer, engineer, and manager.
