Description
Pictures printed with modern inkjet printers are hanging in fine art museums around the world. In this workshop you will learn how to make museum-quality prints of your own images using MCP's Epson inkjet printers.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will print their color and black and white images on MCP's Epson 7800 wide-format inkjet printers. Techniques learned can also be used with smaller desktop printers like the Epson 3800 and 2400.
As part of the class, students will print on several different papers, both matte and glossy. Special attention will be given to the new art papers, including some that are optimized for black and white printing.
At the end of the class the student will be able to:
+ optimize an image for printing on inkjet printers
+ set up color management to get the most accurate color
+ use Proof Setup to preview how a final print will look
+ use Gamut Warning to identify and fix out of gamut colors
+ chose from a variety of new state-of-the-art papers
+ print black and white without color casts
+ tone black and white prints digitally
+ sharpen an image for optimal printing
Requirements
Students should have significant experience with Adobe Photoshop, especially using Levels and Curves to adjust image tonalities.
Expenses for paper and ink are charged separately. The charge will depend on the amount of ink and paper the student uses. The new high-performance papers are expensive. Depending on the paper used, a 17"x22" print may cost $10-20. 13"x19" prints may cost $8-12.
The class is hands-on, with each student using their own iMac computer. Students will practice each concept during the workshop to make sure they understand it. The workshop is taught on Apple computers but, once within the Photoshop application, the functionality and user interface are nearly identical to Windows. Windows users will easily learn the few Mac computer functions that are required.
Bio
Steve Bye is an Adobe Certified Instructor of Photoshop. He has used it extensively since the release of version 4, over ten years ago.
After shutting down his wet darkroom many years ago, his interest in photography was rekindled when the very first photo inkjet printers became available. Though their quality at the time was poor, digital photography using inkjet printers seemed worth investigating. Now, ten years later, Steve has worked extensively with over seven models of Epson printers, using Photoshop to optimize images for printing on fine art papers and new media that simulate silver gelatin papers.
Steve's strength as a teacher is in explaining difficult concepts in easily understandable ways, a skill learned while at Hewlett-Packard, as a trainer, engineer, and manager.
