Artists Live-Work Housing Nears Reality, NE Mnpls
In the spring of 2009 the Northeast Minneapolis Community Development Corporation (NE CDC) is scheduled to break ground on the Jackson Artists Center, a revolutionary live-work complex actually designed by local artists with the aid of the Logan Park Neighborhood association.
The project is being developed by the NE CDC with the building plan meeting the highest standards of durability, flexibilty, and sustainability. More significantly, the building also meets the highest standards of artists. After three years of design charetttes, focus groups, market studies, studio tours, complete redesigns, and more focus groups, the NE CDC projec team feels confident they and the artists have a common vision.
Unique amenities include a gallery space, an office/technology area, a freight-sized elevator and functional loading dock, underground parking, and an outdoor sculpture/zen garden. The building is being designed using current green/sustainable building techniques and will be built to the Silver standard of LEED certification.
The 43 live-work studios will function as personal studio space. Features include 10 or 12 foot ceilings, minimal interior walls, concrete floors, soundproofing, 220 power, big doorways, industrial strength plumbing fixtures, and high quality natural lighting and ventilation systems.
But the most exciting feature is that they've managed to squeeze all this into a building that will cost 43 studio purchasers about $175 per square foot - 10% less than the current market price for condos , and considering the features, a huge value. And to up the affordability quotient even more, about half of the 43 units will be offered under a land trust arrangement that will bring the cost of many living units to under $100,000.
More information on the Jackson Artists Housing Project can be found at NE CDC's website at www.necdc.org.

Maxwell MacKenzie talk

Maxwell MacKenzie dicusses his photography book Markings at Magers and Quinn.
"In his latest book Markings, photographer Maxwell MaKenzie rises above America's heartland to focus sharply on man's markings on the landscape. From his ultra-light aircraft, MacKenzie soars above farmland and lake, river and prairie to capture man's engravings - or markings - carved in various rhythms and shapes, the original purpose of which may be known only to the patterns' creators."

Jennifer resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is originally from Franklin, Wisconsin.
From Jenny's artist statement: My work questions constructed standards in relation to sexuality, gender, and societal roles. What do these conventions mean? How do they inform our daily-life? Nan Goldin's perspective from within as seen in the friends and lovers' relationships of the Ballad of Sexual Dependency suggests the essential way in which to achieve understanding. From within. This concept permeates my artistic methodology through the transfer of life stories, sexuality, and gender multiplicity from one community to another.

DissentObjectProtest
to July 25, 2008
Protest' is stigmatized as an ineffectual cliché. Taking to the streets with a banner and a fist in the air against the Powers That Be is so 1968/Seattle/G8. In reality, protest takes many forms, recent popular options being: buycotts, shopping locally, voting for Mickey Mouse, turning your lights off, driving below the speed limit, etc. Progenitors of protest are notoriously creative, and we seek writings that think beyond Adbusters and fuel-efficient cars.
