About the Project
The Other Which is Us explores portraiture as it relates to identification. In 1947, Andrea Gordon Murrill's father shot a series of portraits of Micronesian natives as a research project for his Ph.D. in physical anthropology. The images depict frontal posed portraits of individuals wearing numbered signs for identification. Murrill mines the archive of negatives left by her father, digitally manipulating the photographs so we are only able to reference the individuals by their identification number.
